How to Declutter After the Holiday Season

Having a reset post-holiday activities can be a whole family affair! The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration but can come with an accumulation of lots of stuff—decorations, gifts, and even leftover packaging can leave your home feeling overwhelmed. As we usher in a new year, decluttering can provide a sense of renewal and set the tone for a more organized year ahead. Here’s how to tackle post-holiday clutter effectively!

Step 1: Take Down Decorations Thoughtfully

Holiday decorations bring warmth and cheer, but once the season is over, they can feel like extra baggage. Start by taking down decorations in stages. Sort items into categories (lights, ornaments, wreaths, etc.) and check for anything broken or no longer usable. Donate decorations you no longer love or use to local thrift sores. Use labeled, sturdy storage bins for what you keep, and consider vacuum-sealed bags for items like garlands or fabric decorations to save space. Be sure to clearly label your bins and bags – despite what you might think today, you probably won't remember what was in each box in 10 months. A functional label doesn't have to be fancy - washi or painter's tape are great options!

Step 2: Assess and Reorganize Gifts

While holiday gifts are meant to bring joy, some might not fit your lifestyle or space. Take inventory of your new items. If you received duplicates of things you know you won’t use, don’t hesitate to re-gift, return, or donate them. This process helps reduce clutter and ensures that these items find homes where they’ll be appreciated.

If new items have replaced old ones, apply the “one in, one out” rule. For instance, if you received a new sweater, consider donating an older one to make room in your wardrobe.

Step 3: Recycle and Dispose of Extra Packaging

The holiday season often comes with piles of wrapping paper, boxes, and ribbons. Sort through leftover packaging materials, setting aside anything reusable for future occasions. Recycle what you can, but be mindful of local recycling rules, as some wrapping paper and ribbons may not be recyclable. If you live in the greater Boston area, you can bring your gently used wrapping paper and ribbon to Make & Mend for re-use! For a sustainable touch, consider using fabric gift wraps or recyclable craft paper next year.

Step 4: Set Intentions for the New Year

Decluttering isn’t just about clearing space—it’s about creating an environment that supports your goals and well-being. Use this time to reflect on what you truly value. By letting go of unnecessary items, you make room for what matters most. Write down your intentions and goals and keep them in a visible place as a reminder. Scheduling a few minutes of tidying each week can save you from feeling overwhelmed when the clutter builds up. Take it one step at a time and enjoy the process of creating a more organized and peaceful home.
