How to Create A Craft Station
Looking for your next fun organizing project? One great way to get organized is to create your own craft station. Oftentimes our projects like gift wrapping and knitting end up on the top shelf of our closets. You may find yourself forgetting what projects you haven’t finished, or forgetting what you already have, and over-buying. Designating one space in the home for your crafts will keep you organized and encourage your craft work!
Great places for a craft station include a corner in your home office, a lightly used guest closet, or part of a garage or basement (she-shed anyone?). Start by gathering all of your craft items, supplies, and projects. You may be surprised how many rooms they have sprawled into! Identify your categories of crafts such as painting, knitting, scrapbooking, etc.
Here are a few tips while setting up your new space:
Keep your categories on separate shelves and drawers, assigning your favorite crafting to the most accessible height. Organizing by color can also be super helpful with craft stations.
Labeling your bins and shelves will help maintain the space project to project.
Make sure to include duplicates of everyday supplies you will need that could be used in other spaces in your house like scissors and tape.
Keep a digital inventory of your supplies so that when you head to Michaels or Target you know exactly what you have and what you need.
Products we love:
Keeping your craft items visible and accessible is super important- you can keep up with your projects and will be inspired to start new ones. We love this paper storage case for scrapbooking- it’s made by Iris and can be found at The Container Store. It’s the perfect size for papers and cut-outs, while being clear, lightweight, and stackable. It’s also acid-free for delicate fabrics and trimmings.
For storing yarn- avoid plastic bags. Yarn needs to breathe, especially for long-term storage. We love this bin for knitting projects. It’s made out of natural seagrass and has handles allowing you to carry it from closet to couch. It folds inward so you have the option of using it two ways depending on the size of your project.
We loooove this Elfa gift wrap cart- love love! It has a wide flat surface for gift wrap, a vertical holder for your rolls to stay intact, and great drawer storage for totes, bows, and supplies.
Another option is a 3-tier rolling cart like this one from The Container Store. Target, Amazon and Ikea all have similar options. If you want to take it to the next level, you can add on these magnetic Perch containers to hold smaller tools and items on the side.
These Smart Store Totes from The Container Store are another option for both kids and adults to store your art supplies by category into removable inserts. Once you’re done crafting you can simply put the totes back into the bin and put the bin away.
Creating and designating one area of your home for your crafts will help your creativity year round. By containing and assigning your area, you will be able to stay organized and enjoy your craft work more fully!
